Desperate measures. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you have to face a knife barehanded, it is a tough and risky decision, and sometimes the danger decides it for you and you you are left without a choice.

Hand to Hand techniques are important even in a weapon system.  Using a tool would be more ideal or useful, however, sometimes things happen that are out of our control. Hand to hand techniques can be useful in a surprise situation, they can buy you time or give you “less than lethal” options.  You are the weapon.

Everything has a context and with that we see how things fit.  Empty-hand club assault defenses are predicated on the “when” and “why”.  It’s mostly about creating the opportunity like proper distancing, pressure and timing.

The video is mostly a demonstration of options that connect into the traditional context of the method.

under the shadow on a hot day

The Sumbrada is a Non-standard drill that isn’t part of the CORE Lightning Scientific Arnis curriculum. Coming from the word “sombra” or shadow, we can infer it means “hiding behind/underneath the shadow of your stick” or “follow your opponents movements like his shadow.”

Ideally , from point of contact, I prefer to move in and execute Baston Serrada.  What the Sumbrada drill does is that it improves the awareness and reaction time at close range.  It also helps reduce hesitation at the contact position.  It is also a great drill to connect to Baston Serrada, Agaw-Baston, Sagasa and other escalations.

Close Quarters Stickwork is one of the strong points of Lightning Scientific Arnis. It is the application of continuous unrelenting pressure from point of contact and the understanding of what options and repertoire are at your disposal that give you an advantage.  It is proper training that puts these skills at your fingertips.

helping Perry get the point

I find Filipino Martial Arts’ (FMA) mindset in training very interesting, particularly when it come to partnered training.  Bigay-Tama is a two-man drill set that is exclusive to Lightning Scientific Arnis system/style that develops appropriate responses to threats in different ranges and appropriate responses that support the repertoire of the style.

Here’s a video of the Bigay-Tama segment of our demo at the KNIFE SHOW, enjoy 😛
