EVENT: Go Greeced Lightning!

Posted: May 22, 2016 in Events

MAY 14 & 15 2016 –  This year I was invited by a new friend to be one of the instructors in his annual international Filipino martial arts seminar in Athens, Greece.  This trip got me particularly interested because who wouldn’t want to do a seminar in Greece, weren’t the Spartans Greek? This is the land of Zeus, Athena, Achilles… the land where the blueprint of some of the greatest heroes and warriors was drafted.

The seminar was a triple header with our Greek host Michael Kossivakis of FMA Greece, Johan Skalberg from Kali-Sikaran Sweden and myself from good old Philippines via Israel.  This event was spread out to two-days worth of training rotating around 3 instructors. A pretty good way to get a taste of everything.   There was a mix of material from classical stickwork, to tactical knifework and different combinations in between.  It was great to see disciplined and motivated practitioners training together from different backgrounds, arts and disciplines. It was also interesting to note that the event was participated in by individuals coming from other places abroad.
We had the locals, a Swede, a Bruneian from the UK, an Israeli of Indian parentage and a dash of Filipino. Almost like a Benetton advertisement.

it is awesome to see the spread of fma on the global scale, much more to be a part of it.  it is inspiring to see fma as a common ground for different nationalities from all corners of the globe.  In the end, we make new friends and find new comrades.  What was once divisive now serves as a reason to unite and come together in harmony and cooperation.
