It’s about skill, not gimmicks.

It is about the development of lasting skill. A transferable skill to different combinations of weapon sets. It is about connecting skills that work well together.  It is about skill that improves with age. It is about understanding things to its completeness. It is about total understanding and not flashy gimmicks or trendy fads or fancy uniforms and gear we see in movies. It is about the flexible understanding of principles. Not about memorized sets or cookie-cutter solutions.

It is about skill that gets better with experience. It is about understanding that deepens with testing yourself.

Unlock your inner potential.

And so we are back again for the 2016 evaluation and Levels testing in LSAIsrael!  A great opportunity for growth and progress in our practice of Filipino Martial Arts.  Students prepared months in advance for this assessment and it is great to see them bring their hard work into fruition.  It was good to see new students attain their Levels as well as current members advance to higher levels of study.

MARCH 3-5, 2016 – Here at LSAIsrael, we do our best to outdo ourselves with each next activity. This year we held our 2nd Winter Camp in Eilat in the south of Israel. Great sunny weather the whole weekend, we exceeded our planned 10 hours of training! In addition to our planned training hours we had a bonus session of some good old fashioned stick sparring and friend and guest instructor Brenton Welford gave us a taste of Kalis Ilustrismo.

Eilat is a great venue for these camps for its accessibility to all sorts of entertainment and other fun leisure activities indoor and outdoor. It also has night activities for those who need a little something to wrap up the day.

Seminar topics vary every year. This years focus was to beef up our core material. We have a very broad curriculum and these weekend seminar campsare great opportunities to cover the material with more depth. It is also a great time for people to make friendships and forge bonds. The camps are very much a family affair where members can bring along relatives and family.

Seminar Topics – LSAIsrael Winter Camp – Eilat 2016

Day 1
– Short Stick Pushing and Trapping
– Solo Baston serrada

Day 2
– Hand to Hand Combat
– Close Quarters Knife
– Empty Hand knife defense
– Doble Baston on the beach

Day 3
– Kalis Ilustrisimo workshop

Buffet meals, the only open indoor pool in winter, open bar on drinks, on-stage evening entertainment, various other outdoor activities. Maybe next seminar you should join us 😛

All-in-all it was a full and awesome weekend and we look forward to improving the experience each year.

Thanks go to Neta and Ofer for making the arrangements and making sure everything went awesome!

Day 1Day 2Day 3

JANUARY 22, 2016LSAIsrael starts its year off with a seminar at it Rishon LeZion branch!  In its commitment to promote the Filipino Martial Arts we are doing more seminars in the country.
The day’s topic was on stick trapping in close range as an option to immobilize and isolate the opponent’s weapon and create an opportunity to counterattack.  There’s a balance between knowing by instinct and knowing by experience. We train so that instinct and experience together can help up us in making life changing decisions.

learning to stick with it

The second topic was on releasing a trapped or captured weapon hand and creating the opportunity to counter-attack. When your weapon hand is trapped or compromised you have less than a second to react to the situation.  Creating the proper foundation for your reaction is important, otherwise you will just be setting yourself up for your opponent’s advantage or failure.

A friend of mine published an article about us on his Blog TALKING THE EDGE on September 11, 2012.  Its been years since then so sometimes I wonder if I made any sense at all saying all those things.  Its like a time capsule showing me a memory or a glimpse of what was on my mind and going on in my life at that time and if I was making any sense at all.

So without further ado here’s the link to his article,

“FMA for 21st Century – Interview with Jon Escudero”

Be sure to read the rest of his blog as the topics are quite interesting.

Happy Reading.

With the Holidays over here coming to a close, its time to think about training.

Here are a few options to sort out your week:

SEPTEMBER 2015 – And so we are back in the USA again to support the growth and progress of LIGHTNING SCIENTIFIC ARNIS – LIGHTNING COMBATIVES.  We accomplish this through a series of seminars and workshops on selected topics from the vast curriculum.

WASHINGTON DC

We kick things off with DC Lightning Scientific Arnis headed by Angelo Garcia where we did a 2-day seminar on the use of the Knife with the principles of Lanseta Serrada. We bring this forward into control positions for misdirection, trapping and sectoring to hunt for better opportunities. Day 2 we work on the “short stick” in Serrada and taking it to an  aggressive methodology of “triggered” striking, we also escalate to working on attack substitutions in close-range.  Its great to see you guys pick up the material so well and I’m looking forward to throwing more stuff at you guys in the future.

In MKG (Minesota Kali Group) Seattle under Andy Wilson, we work on the development of the Double Stick form of Bigay-Tama.  Double-stick control drills and walking drills comprise the first part of Day-1 with the second half on working on the drill proper putting more detail into the roles of Feeder and Receiver as well as the various techniques available in both roles.  On Day-2 we put emphasis on the close quarter aspects of stickfighting focusing on the principle of “Sagasa”, and working centerline pressure.  This lesson covered entry, point of contact, power striking on the centerline and disengaging.  The lesson also covered logical attack substitutions depending on range and opportunity.

Andy is a great guy with lot of Martial Arts experience and i enjoy picking his brains about different teaching methods and training styles.  Conversations with him are very interesting and eye-opening regarding training methods, training philosophies, and the teaching experience in general.  Thumbs-up to Bryce and Vince who worked on bringing the new guys up to speed on their testing material.  A bellyful of thanks go to Czar for his hospitality and all the others who make my trip there a blast! More “gastro-tourism” yeah!

Rank testing was also conducted in Seattle, with the following individuals passing their testing requirements.

Level 2
Vincent Beltran – MKG Seattle
Bryce Tillet – MKG Seattle
James Bryndza – Abbotsford FMA, Canada

Level 1
Mandy Wong – MKG Seattle
Czar Peralta  – MKG Seattle
Victor Young – MKG Seattle
Edmund Ng – MKG Seattle
Jose Ramos – MKG Seattle
Julie Rea – MKG Seattle

Also in attendance was Brando Marasigan who made the long drive down from Canada, Chief Instructor of Abbotsford FMA in Canada which is also affiliated with our LIGHTNING COMBATIVES organization.  It’s always a pleasure to have you join just down here where its a little warmer.

All-in-all it was a very busy trip, a lot was accomplished, a lot of material covered.  But best of all is the continuing friendship through our love of the Filipino Martial Arts.  See you next year!
