2017 has been a busy year, busy enough that I’ve let slip work on this blog so i’m sorry its been silent for a while. So where to begin?

Lets start with:
FEBRUARY
Wallace Collection
Did some decompressing in London.  Took a walk around and found myself at the Wallace Collection.  An excellent mix of china, jewelry, arms and armour.  in general a great way to get into the spirit of things.

Lightning Kali Combatives Seminar – Stevenage
IMG_3426
This was the first trip for the year.  Checking up on the Lightning Kali Combatives group headed by Tom Pena.  This year I’m accompanied by Ofer, one of the Instructors in training from the Israel HQ.  The seminar saw some new blood as we refined core principles in Bigay Tama, Agaw Baston and some Stick Takedowns and light groundwork.  The core group also did an in-house review session to bolster the two-man drills and emphasize attribute development.

Royal Armoury – Leeds

Naturally at some point we took a break and finally got to set aside time to visit the Royal Armoury in Leeds.  This is a HUGE collection of arms and armour.  Too much to take in  all in one day… probably need to do it again.

Tel Aviv Seminar –  Lanseta Serrada

Back home and refreshed after the UK trip, ready to inflict some education we do a seminar on the principles behind Lanseta Serrada or filipino knifework using the principles of tersiya serada kadenilya y espada y daga.

Misgav Seminar – Haru Dojo
LSAIsrael gets invited to introduce and present Filipino Martial Arts at the Haru Dojo north of Tel Aviv.  2 hours to get there but well worth it.  It  is always a great experience to present Filipino Martial Arts to potential practitioners.

APRIL
Yemi
There’s nothing like getting some training in while on vacation. At least that was what was on Yemi’s mind.  Member of the DC club under Angelo Garcia, he came over to get some training time a halfstrike has t the HQ participating almost daily in classes and private training.  Of course downtime is awesome since the beach is so close and the food always good.  And yes… some training did happen.

MAY
Knife Show
We get invited pretty often to the local Knife expos here and get some time for demonstrations and such.  Always a good thing as we get to highlight and showcase  different aspects of a broad system.  This one was out of town at Emeq Hefer, Kibbutz north of Tel Aviv. So its always a good thing to have a new audience to present to since as much as FMA is now getting popular, it is still not as mainstream as we think.

JUNE
Dojo Festival – Sachne
Every year we take the club out roughing it… ok semi-roughing it. Dojo Festival is an annual festival where many groups of martial artists come together as a little weekend community sharing in several martial arts related activities.  There’s a lot of fun had for everyone.

JULY
I took a little vacation trip this year and decided to hang out with my buddy Tom.  Funny thing how things work out as David Bardos, half of the dynamic duo, of our Australia group was also there. Wish your were there too Irvin de Castro.  It’s also a funny thing what we consider vacation.

As well as had the opportunity to meet up with an old friend, not the old guy. Always good to meet up Shaun!IMG_3438

Tel Avi – dulo-dulo seminar
IMG_3435
And im back in Tel-aviv.  In this seminar we introduce a little known  self defense multip[lier called the dulo dulo, a little piece of wood just a little longer than the palm.  I think we handled this one pretty well.

SEPTEMBER

Visiting Training Group Leaders

IMG_3443

As the BER months come around so do some old students.  Angelo Garcia, DC Training Group Leader and Eldad Jaeger of our Hongkong Group were in town to get training upgrades… sabich.  Time flies when your having fun and we do get a lot of that as we spent nearly every day of almost as month just smacking each other around.  I think these 2 just fell in love. Can anyone say Whirlwind Bromance?

MKG Seattle

So I’m Stateside in October checking up on how we Lightning is doing in Houston, Dallas and Seattle and the looking is good.  That sounded weird. Seeing lots of growth in skill and understanding and that LSAI is developoing firm roots in these communities.  Thanks go to the efforts of Robert Montifar in Texas for rounding them up  whipping them into shape.  Same goes to the MKG Seattle peeps and the hard work of Bryce Tillet and Vince Beltran through the gudance and mentoring of Guro Andy Wilson, MKG Seattle Head Honcho and Owner.  Special thanks goes to Czar who keeps me well fed and comfy!

NOVEMBER

Visiting Guests and Friends

I can’t be abroad all the time so its always great when people come over.  We had a visit from the guys from the BKMO – British Krav Maga Organization. Looking to working together more with Wayne Edwards and company again!

DECEMBER
My gratitude goes to everyone who make these activities  and trips a joy and and experience.  True the year isn’t over yet but it’s good to get a perspective of how the year has been.  Its been good so I cant wait for the next!  Things are still in the works so stay in touch for the update on our Annual HannuChristmas Party!!!
I never really tire of these things so keep me busy!!!

MARCH 3-5, 2016 – Here at LSAIsrael, we do our best to outdo ourselves with each next activity. This year we held our 2nd Winter Camp in Eilat in the south of Israel. Great sunny weather the whole weekend, we exceeded our planned 10 hours of training! In addition to our planned training hours we had a bonus session of some good old fashioned stick sparring and friend and guest instructor Brenton Welford gave us a taste of Kalis Ilustrismo.

Eilat is a great venue for these camps for its accessibility to all sorts of entertainment and other fun leisure activities indoor and outdoor. It also has night activities for those who need a little something to wrap up the day.

Seminar topics vary every year. This years focus was to beef up our core material. We have a very broad curriculum and these weekend seminar campsare great opportunities to cover the material with more depth. It is also a great time for people to make friendships and forge bonds. The camps are very much a family affair where members can bring along relatives and family.

Seminar Topics – LSAIsrael Winter Camp – Eilat 2016

Day 1
– Short Stick Pushing and Trapping
– Solo Baston serrada

Day 2
– Hand to Hand Combat
– Close Quarters Knife
– Empty Hand knife defense
– Doble Baston on the beach

Day 3
– Kalis Ilustrisimo workshop

Buffet meals, the only open indoor pool in winter, open bar on drinks, on-stage evening entertainment, various other outdoor activities. Maybe next seminar you should join us 😛

All-in-all it was a full and awesome weekend and we look forward to improving the experience each year.

Thanks go to Neta and Ofer for making the arrangements and making sure everything went awesome!

testing 2015 1

2015 Ranking Cermonies

AUGUST 28,2015.  So, that time of year has come again. After our students completed their level testing last week, today they receive there Certificates of Rank for completing the requirements for their specific levels. I am proud to acknowledge the hard work our members put into their preparations for testing, as well as during the testing itself.  The pressure of performing under the watchful gaze of an audience while being graded by the instructor can be nerve-wracking.

showtime!!!

So I would like to congratulate this year’s batch and wish them good luck as they join those already there and encourage those whose turn is still to come.  We would like to also acknowledge the presence of the Philippine Ambassador to Israel, HE Ambassador Neal Imperial who gave a short message and award the certificates to this years batch and members of LSAIsrael.
testing 2015 2

a little reward for the hard work

Thanks also go to the senior members and Apprentice Instructors for their assistance during the testing.  They boldly put their bodies in harm’s way to  facilitate a successful and safe testing. 😛
So to everyone, Tatlong Basbas on you!
Congratulations! Goodluck! Good Job!

LSAIsrael is the bastion of Lightning Scientific Arnis and the Legacy of Grandmaster Benjamin Luna Lema in the Holy Land.  Now into its 7th year and still growing strong, I am very grateful to my students and the opportunity to pass on to them this cultural inheritance.

Binaston Sa Capiztahan 2015

Binaston Sa Capiztahan 2015

We’ve been back to the Philippines for almost a week now.  After a rush meet r and greet with family and friends we are off to Roxas City to visit the Capiztahan Festival where Lightning Scientific Arnis Roxas City is hosting it’s annual Binaston sa Capiztahan tournament. Competitors from many groups in the region participated in the Forms and Full-contact events.

The forms competition participants showed amazing skill and competence.  Forms isn’t usually my favorite event but these players caught my attention.  They showed intent and power in their movements  as well as strength and grace.
Roxas City LSAI HQ

Roxas City LSAI HQ

Visiting the old school HQ under the stands at Villareal Stadium was a walk through history.  Old certificates, faded photographs, old charts and diagrams. A lot of history, this being one of the first LSAI clubs.  I also heard of some damage from the storm called “Yolanda” damaging part of the gym, photos and equipment. But through it all they still stay strong.  From what I heard, LSAI seems to be everywhere here all the way up to the governors house.

It was just a quick visit as other obligations pull us away.  It was fun meeting the older generation of gentlemen who strive to preserve the same legacy I am a part of.  It was also great to see this legacy growing in the hearts and hands of the younger generation. I ride away with a better appreciation of the path I choose to walk.

JON ESCUDERO – LIGHTNING COMBATIVES with KILAT SENJATA Members and Instructors

For a small place there is so much to see, do, eat in Singapore!
JON ESCUDERO – Lightning Combatives visits Kilat Senjata – Lightning Arnis Singapore.
For three intensive days (April 3-5, 2015) Kilat Senjata was working the stick and the knife in  the Classical Material of Lightning Scientific Arnis  as well as the Tactical Combat material we practice in Israel.
The KS members are a hard working, well disciplined bunch who don’t balk at the heat and sweat indoors or outdoors.  KS was founded by Guro Vicente Reyes to teach, propagate and promote LSA and Filipino Martial Arts.  Now in Australia, his vision is faithfully continued by his senior instructors.
Our thanks go to Mark and his family, Matthew and the Kilat Senjata Members who made our stay very welcome and enjoyable. And best wishes go to old friends like Ron and Marcus  whose friendship is a treasure.
Looking forward to seeing you all in Singapore again soon!
