EVENT: TALK – Weapons and Warrior Arts of the Philippines

Posted: January 10, 2016 in Events

IMG_3178.JPGI had an interesting opportunity last December 3 to give a talk on some of the Weapons and Warrior Arts of the Philippines at the Society of Ethnographic Historic Edged Weapon Collectors in Israel. Seeing this as a great opportunity to present some of the history and stories that go with the blades as well as shed some light on some theories that revolve around these blades.

Of course some demonstration was in order to give a different perspective of how they are used in the traditional arts.

Kris, Kampilan, Barung, these are just some of the blades that were presented. The all purpose Itak or bolo the Balisong along the shorter range were also discussed.

We also took a look at the Karambit. This Southeast Asian weapon has been adopted wholeheartedly into the Filipino Martial Arts and has been the focus of a lot of interest regarding its structure, design and method of use.

Thanks go to Sa’ar Nudel for the invitation and opportunity to talk about the Philippine Culture and FMA at the gathering.

Thanks go to Sagi Bialik for putting a video excerpt  online which you can watch here.

Full demo is on my channel here.
